Fukui Prefecture

A Tourists Guidebook to the 100 Best Places

7.jpg

When I first came to Fukui Prefecture I was surprised by how little information there was in English. I wanted to travel around, but I didn't have a car, and without an English guidebook it was difficult. I figured Fukui must not be a fun place, because no one seemed interested in it. But that was not true! Soon I was travelling to Tojimbo, and hiking up Arashimadake. It was at Uri wari no taki that I decided that Fukui was too beautiful a place to not have a guidebook. I would finally write my own.

It took me years to write the guidebook and take the photos. With a full time job, children, and bad weather I thought I might never finish. Becoming a father was important to the project. I saw my children as both Japanese and American. I wanted them to see Fukui as I saw Fukui. I wanted them to be proud of who they were. So I worked harder, and in 2011, I finished. To this day I have only sold 500 copies of my book. I have not made much money from it. But I am proud of my work, and currently working on a new book I hope to finish before the Olympics next year! Wish me luck!
